Social Sciences Building (SSB), Room 118

The UAA Biology Seminar Series is pleased to host UAA's own Dr. Frank von Hippel who will present "Scuds, FUDS and Crud: Stickleback Ecotoxicology" this afternoon.

"Scuds, FUDS and Crud: Stickleback Ecotoxicology" will address two major projects. The first is an examination of perchlorate ecotoxicology, from the molecular level to trophic transfer in natural ecosystems. Perchlorate is a widespread and unregulated contaminant that is the oxidizer of solid rocket fuel, road flares, fireworks, automobile air bags, and many other products. Study has found that perchlorate induces functional hermaphroditism in genotypically-female stickleback fish, and causes the formation of extra large testes in genotypically-male stickleback.

The second major project addressed in this talk is new work on contaminants from formerly used defense sites (FUDS) in communities on Norton Sound and St. Lawrence Island.

For our off-campus guests, parking on the UAA campus is free of charge on Fridays. Refreshments will be provided for which your contributions are greatly appreciated.
