What do Kelcie Ralph, Peter Orszag, Ray Dolby and Bruce Babbitt have in common?

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Answer: Lifelong Alaskan and Service High grad Kelcie Ralph is a 2009 Marshall Scholar -- that is, a winner of the U.K.-based Marshall Scholarship that is awarded to up to 40 U.S. undergraduates each year and which allows them to attend a graduate program at any U.K. university they choose.

No other student of any branch of the University of Alaska has ever received a Marshall Scholarship.

Marshall Scholars of the past include former U.S. Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt, current U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, N.Y. Times columnist Tom Friedman, Pulitzer-winning author Daniel Yergen, Dolby Sound inventor Ray Dolby, and Roger Tsien, who was announced last month as the winner of this year's Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
