Fall 2009: Monitoring the H1N1 (Swine Flu) Virus

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Confirmed cases of the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus are on the rise. As of June 12, 2009, the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services announced seven new confirmed cases throughout the state, bringing Alaska's count to 21.

The UAA Campus Response Team would like to remind you of a few tips from the Center for Disease Control's Web site on how to prevent the spread of Swine Flu:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Stay home if you get sick. CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

The Campus Response Team is closely monitoring the situation. For UAA updates, please visit http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/emergency/index.cfm. For additional information, including links to other health-related sites, visit the UA Web site at http://www.alaska.edu/risksafety/a_alerts/swine-flu/.
