Biology Dept. to feature talk by Bjartmar Sveinbjornsson on bryophytes and liches on Sept. 10

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Friday, Sept. 10, 3:30-4:45 p.m.
CPISB, Room 120

The Biology Department is pleased to have as our speaker Bjartmar Sveinbjornsson of the Department of Biological Sciences. He will speak on "What we don't know about bryophytes and lichens and why it matters."

Lichens and bryophytes are important components of many biomes, including the northernmost ones, the taiga and the tundra. Lack of understanding about their basic biology and ecology has led to inappropriate experimental design and resulted in dubious predictions on global change. Their functioning as organisms will be described by examples and improved experimental approaches will be suggested.

Parking on the UAA campus is free on Fridays. No-host refreshments will be provided following the discussion. For more information, contact Sue Farris at ansf3@uaa.alaska.edu.
