Tenor John Nuzzo and pianist Timothy Smith will perform together at UAA on May 13Sunday, May 13, 4-5:45 p.m.

John Ken Nuzzo, the Internationally acclaimed Japanese-American tenor well-known to Anchorage audiences, will be giving a solo voice recital with pianist Timothy Smith at the UAA Recital Hall on Sunday, May 13, at 4 p.m. The program will include selected Italian art songs, opera excerpts from Verdi's "La Traviata," Donizetti's "L'elisir d'Amore" and Puccini's "Tosca," as well as selected Japanese folk songs. The concert will also include an appearance by the Anchorage Children's Choir directed by Grant Cochran, who holds a doctorate of musical arts degree in choral conducting.

Nuzzo, heard last year in Anchorage Opera's "La Boheme" and scheduled to perform in Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the Anchorage Youth Symphony and Anchorage Concert Chorus this season, will be performing in Paul McCartney's "Liverpool Oratorio" with soprano Barbara Bonney in Japan this June.

In 2003, with the invitation of Maestro James Levine, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Brighella in R. Strauss's "Ariadne auf Naxos" and Sellem in Stravinsky's "The Rake's Progress." Under the baton of James Levine, he also made his debut with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra as Jaquino in the concert version of Beethoven's "Fidelio." He then returned to the Salzburg Festival as Nathanael in Offenbach's "Les Contes D'Hoffmann" under the baton of Kent Nagano. He was also featured in Verdi's "Don Carlo" with Valery Gergiev and Saint-Saens's "Samson and Delilah" with Placido Domingo. In 2007, he was featured in the worldwide high-definition broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera's production of Puccini's "Il Trittico."

Tickets for the Nuzzo-Smith concert ($18 general/$15 students, seniors and military) are available at Centertix.net and also at the door on the day of the concert. Donations will also be accepted at the door for the Japan Relief Fund to aid victims of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Northern Japan.
