First deadline: Friday, Feb. 6

Spring semester offers a large number of fellowship and grant application opportunities for undergraduates. Watch Green & Gold over the next three months for descriptions and deadlines. One deadline for three award applications is coming up in early February. Applications often require faculty nominations, so plan time to pull everything together.

Here are three to check out:

The Discovery Awards recognize one UAA undergraduate each year who exemplifies overall academic excellence with exceptional achievement in research or creative abilities. The successful candidate is awarded a $2,000 cash prize. Students must be nominated by their academic departments or a subcommittee from their department. Nominations are due by Friday, Feb. 6. For details on how to nominate a student, see http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/ours/opportunities/research/discovery-award.cfm.

The Alaska Heart Institute Biomedical Research Fellowships offer grants of $5,000 to fund significant undergraduate biomedical research projects under the guidance of a faculty member. Grants pay for project costs, tuition for up to six credits of HNRS 497 (Individual Research) and a $1,500 student stipend upon completion of the project. The spring 2009 deadline is Friday, Feb. 6. Check out the Web site for more details: http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/ours/opportunities/research/ak-heart-institute.cfm.

The Parasca Science Research Award offers $5,000 ($4,000 for project expenses plus a $1,000 student stipend) to fund significant undergraduate research in any area of science or social science, under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Proposals should be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Research & Scholarship by Friday, Feb. 6.
