UAA undergrads present new research Friday

NASA astronaut Tracy Caldwell-Dyson giving free, public talk Thursday

April 15, 2015

For years they’ve toiled in labs and the field looking for clues about cancer, concussions and climate change. Now it’s time for show-and-tell.

UAA’s Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium features student presentations 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, April 17 in UAA’s Rasmuson Hall. NASA astronaut Tracy Caldwell-Dyson gives the keynote speech the night prior, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in UAA’s Wendy Williamson Auditorium.

Student presentations include Anna Hamre and Kolaiah Baker, who designed a mouth guard that tracks information about impacts that could cause concussions in athletes. Kivalina Grove discusses biases against people with tattoos, and Tesia Forstner talks about tracking black turnstone bird populations that disappeared from Montague Island after the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill.

The annual symposium celebrates undergraduate research taking place across UAA in all disciplines, and fosters scholarly discussion between students, faculty and the community. These events organized by the University Honors College are free and open to the public. Find a complete schedule and learn more at uaa.alaska.edu.
