On March 27, 2026, the College of Business and Public Policy (CBPP) proudly hosted its annual Business Plan and Big Idea Competition, also known as Perfect Pitch, bringing together some of Alaska’s most promising young entrepreneurs for an evening of creativity, innovation, and competition.
Designed to foster entrepreneurial thinking and real world problem solving, this year’s event featured five impressive Big Idea presentations from Anchorage School District high school students. Each participant took the stage to pitch their concept to a panel of esteemed judges, receiving valuable real time feedback to help refine and advance their ventures. The event was well attended, and the energy remained high throughout the evening.
The competition offered a total of $5,750 in cash prizes, recognizing students whose ideas demonstrated exceptional strength, feasibility, and potential impact. Awards included Grand Prize awarded to Ms. Erin Alley from King Tech High School, Second Prize to Mr. Jonas Dixon from West Anchorage High School, Third Prize to Mr. Shepherd Brown from King Tech High School, Honorable Mention to the team of Lisa Vaivai, Alyx Gamboa, and Sarah Keobouala from King Tech High School, and the crowd favorite People’s Choice Award to Mr. Jonas Dixon from West Anchorage High School. In addition, the educator of the Grand Prize winning student was recognized for their vital role in supporting the next generation of innovators. This award went to Ms. Stacy Miller of King Tech High School.

First-year judge Trish Moreland provided this insight, “Choosing between first and second place was not easy—both teams impressed in very different ways. Ultimately, the decision came down to which concept I would feel confident backing financially. The strongest ideas were those that clearly connected a real-world problem to a defined customer and a realistic path to revenue.”
CBPP extends its sincere gratitude to event sponsors Accomplice, GCI, and ACS, whose generous support makes opportunities like this possible. The college also thanks its dedicated panel of judges, Mr. Jason Stevens from UAA, Ms. Skye Nevada, CBPP Advisory Board President and Co-Owner of The Bridge, and Ms. Trish Moreland from the Alaska Small Business Development Center, for lending their expertise and encouragement to each participant.
“This year’s Business Plan Competition was both exciting and inspiring, especially through our collaboration with Anchorage School District students,” said Interim Dean Terry Nelson. “This event reflects exactly who we are as a college. We are committed to creating opportunities where students can apply their ideas, build confidence, and connect with industry and community partners. Seeing the creativity, confidence, and potential of these students truly highlights the value of hands-on learning and strong community partnerships.”

Finally, this event would not be possible without the continued commitment of CBPP faculty and staff, whose efforts ensure students have access to meaningful, hands-on learning
experiences that prepare them for future success.
The Business Plan and Big Idea Competition continues to be a cornerstone event for CBPP, highlighting the ingenuity and drive of Alaska’s young entrepreneurs and reinforcing the university’s commitment to supporting innovation across the state.
