Building Virtual Bridges: A Guide to Distance-delivered Microenterprise Training for Individuals with Disabilities

The purpose of the Building Virtual Bridges guide is to offer insight and ideas for how to conduct distance-delivered business training and networking opportunities for individuals who may or may not experience a disability and are low income. Each section of this document describes an essential component of the model. Keep in mind that this is a guide. It is not necessary for you or your organization to follow it step by step; however, it can assist you in developing a program for your area and can provide insight and resources for implementing your own program.

Each component of the model is discussed in detail and is accompanied by examples from our own project. Our vision is that this guide will inspire others to support entrepreneurs with disabilities in non-traditional ways that are effective and appropriate.

Building Virtual Bridges is a product of the Industry-Driven Support Model project, a self-employment research and demonstration project, at the Center for Human Development that is funded in part through a grant award with the U.S. Small Business Administration. The Industry-Driven Support Model was developed as a way to bring entrepreneurs from all parts of Alaska with various disabilities together through one common theme, owning a small business in a similar industry.
