Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is a Surgical Technologist?
A surgical technologist, or surg tech, is a health care professional who prepares, maintains, and protects the operating room for the safety of the patient. They work alongside and assist surgeons and all other members of the care team throughout a surgical procedure. (We like to call ourselves surgical ninjas!)
-
What is the current employment outlook for Surgical Technologists?
Great! The projected growth of surgical technologist employment between 2024 and 2034 is projected at 5 percent, which is considered faster than average. (bls.gov)
-
What is the median salary?
The national median salary for surgical technologists is $62,480 or about $30.04 per hour. This is the national average, the Alaska region can be higher as well as available shift differentials and on-call or call-back pay.
-
Is this program available online?
No. Due to the hands-on nature of the courses and the laboratory requirements, this is an on-site and in-person program only.
-
Is this program available as part time?
No. Unfortunately, due to the structure of this program, it is a full-time commitment.
-
Are there any post-admission requirements?
Yes. Upon admission into the program, there is a required criminal background check. Up to date vaccination records, TB test, and drug test requirements will also be discussed.
-
Is certification a requirement for graduation?
No. The state of Alaska does not require certification to work as a surgical technologist, so it is not a graded portion of the program. It is highly encouraged to take the national exam because it may be required outside of Alaska, if you should move out of state, as well as most facilities prefer certification and increased wages for those who possess it.
-
Are there additional expenses associated with acceptance?
Yes. We have a uniform requirement of black scrubs and comfortable shoes. We also encourage the purchase of reusable eye protection or prescription safety glasses and cloth surgical hats, but these are not required. Other expenses could include the payments for lab tests and drug test for clinical rotations.
