Fall 2025 Special Edition

Dear Graduate School Community,

As we near the end of the semester, we are proud to announce that Stacy Brunquist will serve as the Fall 2025 Graduate Student Speaker at the Graduate Hooding Ceremony. When she first came to Alaska as a traveling neonatal nurse, she planned to stay for only three months, expecting to complete her contract at Providence Alaska Children’s Hospital before moving on to her next assignment. Instead, she built a life in Alaska — she married, became a mother, and will soon earn her Doctor of Nursing Practice.

Today, Brunquist works as a neonatal nurse practitioner at Providence while continuing to travel around Alaska to provide specialized newborn care and training. Her career reflects the close relationship between Providence and UAA, helping guide the next generation of nurses through courses on caring for newborns. Read more about Stacy's journey as a graduate student, an adjunct professor, and a medical professional.

Please also note that this Friday, December 5, 2025 is the final deadline to RSVP for the Fall 2025 Graduate Hooding Ceremony, which takes place on Saturday, December 13th, 2025 at 2:00pm, and the Fall 2025 Commencement Ceremony, which takes place on Sunday, December 14, 2025 at 1:00pm.

If you are graduating this semester (or graduated during the summer semester), please complete the RSVP steps promptly to ensure your participation in these events. December ceremonies have general admission seating and guest tickets or advance reservations are not required, meaning graduates can invite an unlimited number of guests.

Nursing is the best profession ever, because you can choose any population, any setting and any specialty, and be able to make a difference in families’ lives every time you go to work.

The ceremonies will also be streamed on Facebook Live, with no login required. Want to start celebrating now? Check out UAA's Digital Tookit! You can also submit to our Graduate Student Spotlight, either as a current student or as a soon-to-be alum.

We are pleased to note that more events for graduate students are reflected on our calendar, whether hosted by our team or other departments at UAA. This calendar can be found on our Graduate School website.

Looking ahead, we will host an orientation session in Social Sciences Building - Room 119 and on Zoom, with optional campus tour, for new students on Thursday, January 8, 2026 from 9:30 – 11:30am. Continuing students are more than welcome to attend, especially those who may not have experienced a full orientation in the past. Whether you need a full orientation or just a refresher, we would love to see you there! It's also a great way to meet other graduate students and connect with Graduate School staff and leadership before the semester starts.

Congratulations to all our graduates! Your hard work and perseverance have brought you to this moment, and we look forward to celebrating your achievements together. For those of you continuing on with us, keep goingyou're almost there! If you have any questions or need assistance, please reach out to the Graduate School team at 907-786-1098 or uaa_graduateschool@alaska.edu.

A MESSAGE FROM PROVOST RUNGE

Former Graduate School Dean Mary Jo Finney, Ph.D., transitioned into a new role in November 2025, after nearly six years of exceptional leadership in the Graduate School. Dr. Colin McGill, Vice Provost for Faculty Success, has since stepped into the position of Interim Dean. The following letter was sent out via email in November by UAA Provost Denise Runge, and is republished here.

Dear UAA Community,

Following nearly six highly successful years focused on elevating and expanding the role of the Graduate School at UAA, Dr. Mary Jo Finney, Dean and Professor of Education, has decided to transition into a new role. Starting later this month and lasting the next several years, Mary Jo will move into the UAA School of Education, where she will help to revitalize, elevate and expand its Professional and Continuing Education unit (PACE). Mary Jo brings over two decades of experience in teacher development and leadership, with specific expertise in leadership development, literacy assessment and teacher identity. Her passion and skill in preparing and supporting educators at all levels will help PACE continue to serve the immediate and changing professional development needs of educators throughout Alaska.

Additionally, Mary Jo will continue to support the Graduate School as Senior Faculty Fellow, assisting with the transition and continuing some of her current responsibilities in support of graduate students, including her popular short courses and her teaching and mentoring roles within the Interdisciplinary program.

Given a variety of other leadership transitions, ongoing budgetary constraints and potential changes around practices such as recruitment and admissions, I have decided to appoint Vice Provost of Faculty Success Colin McGill as the Interim Dean of the Graduate School. Colin will assume these duties in addition to those of his current role. In consultation with the Graduate Academic Board and the Graduate Advisory Council, I will reassess the position next year before making any permanent decisions. I thank Colin for his willingness to step up in supporting graduate education at UAA.

Please join me in thanking Mary Jo Finney for her impactful and excellent service as Graduate School Dean since 2020 and in welcoming her into her new roles leading the PACE program and as Senior Faculty Fellow for Graduate Education. Please also join me in welcoming Colin McGill as Interim Dean of the Graduate School.
