UAA Presents the Symphony of Sounds

UAA's Department of Music presents the eleventh installment of the popular concert series, Symphony of Sounds, in the Fine Arts Building Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, and Saturday, Feb. 24. A different take on the concert experience, Symphony of Sounds is presented as a continuous collage of performers highlighted by special lighting effects and staging. The show will feature all of UAA's ensembles, including the Jazz, Clarinet, Brass, Percussion and Guitar ensembles, the University Singers, Sinfonia, and Wind Ensemble, and selected soloists and chamber groups performing music ranging from jazz to the classics.

One of the best showcases for young musicians in Alaska, UAA music majors compete to be part of the program, with the best performers selected to show their skills.

The Feb. 23 and 24 concerts feature identical programs. A few highlights include: Poulenc "Rustique and Final" for Piano Four Hands; the University Singers singing "Simple Gifts" from Copland's "Old American Songs"; an exciting guitar solo performed by Adam Weber; a piccolo solo by Rebecca See; music by the UAA Brass Quintet and Clarinet Ensemble; and a gripping performance by the University Wind Ensemble of "Huntingtower, Ballad for Band" by Respighi.

Each evening also offers one of the Symphony of Sounds' most popular attractions, the annual auction of the music maestro's baton, which gives the winner the opportunity to conduct the Wind Ensemble in a rousing rendition of the UAA Fight Song.

Tickets for the Symphony of Sounds are available from CenterTix.net or the Box Office in the UAA Fine Arts Building (786-4849). Tickets are $20 for balcony seating, $15 for lower-level seating. All proceeds from the concerts will benefit the Music Endowment.
