by Kathleen McCoy  |

Students from the UAA Health, Physical Education and Recreation program were honored as this months Anchorage Parks and Recreation Volunteers of the Month.
For the past six months students majoring in Physical Education have been volunteering their time at Tyson Elementary School for the Learn to Play recess program as a part of their core course requirements.

Three days a week for the past six months, UAA students and Parks and Recreation staff organize and implemented activities such as scavenger hunts, snow sculpture building and games of tag, among others, for the elementary school students.

Learn to Play is a pilot program designed to promote physical activity, non-violence and play in elementary age children during recess. Through this collaborative program UAA Physical Education majors are able to put into practice the skills they have learned in their leadership classes.

Tyson Elementary faculty and administration have repeatedly echoed their appreciation for both UAA students and the Learn to Play recess program. The school reports fewer disciplinary problems on Learn to Play recess days and an overall excitement for playtime with UAA Students and Parks and Recreation staff.
