Dance Together Alaska Festival
by Kathleen McCoy |
Dance Together Alaska Festival, presented in partnership with the UAA Department of
Theatre and Dance and the UAA Dance Club, is the first of its kind in our state. Its
purpose is to help build an active network between dance enthusiasts statewide. The
festival will honor International Dance Day, April 29th, which has been proposed by
the International Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute, UNESCO in
1982, and has been celebrated world-wide ever since. Every year a message from a well-known
dance personality is circulated throughout the world. According to UNESCO (2006),
"the intention is to bring all dance together on this occasion, to celebrate this
art form and revel in its universality, to cross all political, cultural and ethnic
barriers and bring people together in peace and friendship with a common language."
We believe it is time for the state of Alaska to join this tradition.
The first annual Dance Together Alaska Festival will be hosted by the University of
Alaska Anchorage April 27 - 29, 2007. The festival will include a variety of dance
workshops, performances and social events. The list of instructors and performers
includes faculty and students of Alaska Dance Theatre, Ritmovida Dance Partnership,
Studio 49, Underground Dance Company, West Coast Swing Alaska, Anchorage Classical
Ballet, and more. All festival events will be open to the public. For an updated schedule
