Leave your car at home and bike to work

The Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) encourages your participation in this year's upcoming Bike to Work Day on Wednesday, May 16.  The DHHS is challenging all employees and colleagues that work within the Municipality of Anchorage to get out of their cars and onto their bicycles in celebration of this event.

As a fun incentive, participants who bike to work on May 16 and take a survey will be eligible to win a prize.  Numerous prizes have been donated by the Anchorage Guest House, Alaska Mountain Bike Source, Alaska Mountaineering & Hiking, The Bike Shop, Kaladi Brothers Coffee, Bear Tooth Theatre Pub, Moose's Tooth, Studio One Pilates, Alaska Rock Gym, H2Oasis, Great Harvest Bread Co., Snow City Café, Chain Reaction Cycles, The Imaginarium, Sacks Café and Restaurant, Free Spirit Wear, Girdwood Ski & Cyclery, Glacier Brewhouse/Orso, Paramount Bikes, REI, RTR Bicycles, Skinny Raven Sports, Sunshine Sports and other generous supporters.

By promoting Bike to Work Day, the DHHS hopes to motivate commuters to leave their cars at home (for at least one day!), help reduce local traffic congestion, and improve air quality.  In addition, the increased physical activity of biking to work means improved productivity, decreased rates of illness, reduced absenteeism and lower health care costs. These all benefit employers as well as the employees.

If you are interested in getting involved with the Bike to Work event, please visit http://www.ci.anchorage.ak.us/healthchp/biketoworkday.cfm .  The Web site provides a variety of resources for the event, including a promotional flyer, maps of our local trails, and the municipal bicycle law.  The site also has helpful tips on how to encourage workers to bike.  A way to get employees at your workplace out for the first time is to "buddy up" novice riders with more experienced bicyclists to create teams.

Access the Bike to Work link on the Municipality of Anchorage's home page at http://www.muni.org.  There, individuals or teams from your organization can fill out a quick survey about their bike to work.  The survey will be activated from May 14 through May 25.  Once you have taken the survey you will be registered to possibly win a prize.
