"Music's Role in the Mid-Atlantic Slave Trade and its Transformation to America's Music"

Visiting composer Gary Powell Nash will present a free lecture on "Music's Role in the Mid-Atlantic Slave Trade and its Transformation to America's Music" tonight at 7:30 in the UAA Fine Arts Building room 124.

Dr. Nash, a native of Flint, Michigan has a Ph.D. in Music Composition from Michigan State University and is currently an Associate Professor of composition at Fisk University. Nash's musical compositions have been performed across the United States and abroad. His numerous grants, commissions and awards include the Mississippi Arts Commission, American Composers Forum, Mississippi Humanities Council, and Fulbright at the University of the Philippines.

The University Wind Ensemble will present the Alaskan premiere of Nash's composition "Necrology" on Friday, April 18 at 7:30 in the ACPA Sydney Laurence Theatre. Tickets are available from CenterTix.net.
