Traditional foods and Alaska Native cancer patients: A book talk
by Kathleen McCoy |
Monday, June 2, 1-3 p.m.
UAA Campus Bookstore
Desiree Simeon and Karen Mitchell, authors of Traditional Food Guide for Alaska Native Cancer Survivors, will discuss their book on Monday afternoon, 1-3 p.m., at the Campus Bookstore.
Traditional Food Guide was created for Alaska Native cancer survivors and provides protein analysis of wild Alaska Native diets as well as of the vitamin content of numerous subsistence plants.
Cancer is the leading cause of death among Alaska Natives, as it is for all Alaskans, so this guidebook, when used correctly, can save lives, the authors say. It also provides updated health information, advice and cooking recipes.
The public is welcome to attend this free event. Karen Mitchell is the program administrator for the Office of Native Health Research at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. Desiree Simeon teaches Survey of Alaska Native Nutrition (DN 155 sect 801) at UAA in the fall.
