November is Alaska Native/Native American Heritage Month

by Kathleen McCoy  |

UAA commemorates Alaska Native/Native American Heritage Month and invites the UAA community to participate in campus activities.

Chancellor Fran Ulmer will place her button blanket in the central exhibit case in the Great Room of the UAA/APU Consortium Library for the month of November. Chancellor Ulmer said, "Ten years ago I was adopted into the Kaagwaantaan Clan of the Wolf House. I was given the name Kindzéi. I am an eagle so you will see both an eagle and wolf on the button blanket. Agnes Thlunaut Bellinger, a revered Tlingit elder from Haines and Juneau, was my sponsor and my mentor; she shared her culture with me through stories, dance, song and example. I was deeply honored and feel fortunate to have Alaska Native culture bearers as friends and teachers."
