Diana Shields, a student at UAA's Kodiak College, has been chosen as Alaska's 2009 New Century Scholar, the competition sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, an honor society that recognizes and encourages the academic achievement of students at two-year colleges.

Shields was Alaska's highest scoring student in the All-USA Academic Team and the Coca-Cola All-State team competitions. She won a $2,000 stipend and has been invited to represent Alaska at the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) national convention in Phoenix, AZ in early April.
