Biology Dept. offers Friday talk on declining fur seals in the Pribilof Islands

The Biology Department is please to have as a speaker Ward Testa, wildlife biologist with the National Marine Mammal Laboratory, Alaska Fisheries Science Center affiliate faculty and Biological Sciences UAA. He will present "Northern Fur Seal Reasrch: From bad haircuts to ultrasonography."

Northern fur seals are currently in decline on the Pribilof Islands. Dr Testa will give an overview of the status of these seals in Alaska, and recent research conducted by the Alaska Ecosystems Program of the National Marine Mammal Laboratory. This will include key findings of research on the foraging ecology of adult female fur seals on the Pribilof Islands, overwinter movements of fur seal pups and adults, initiation of new demographic studies and the most recent findings of his own research on fur seal reproductive rates using ultrasonography in 2007 and 2008.
