The Biological Sciences Department of UAA is honored to announce that Shawn Stephensen will be giving his thesis presentation today, March 9, from noon-1 p.m. in UAA/APU Consortium Library, Room 307.

He will describe habitat selection by Kittlitz's and marbled murrelets in Harriman Fiord of Prince William Sound, Alaska. The Kittlitz's murrelet, a rare seabird found in glacial waters of Alaska, has recently experienced severe population declines. As a result, it was listed as a candidate species under the Endangered Species Act in 2004.

Factors that may have contributed to the population decline include human disturbance, global warming and competitive exclusion by the marbled murrelet.
