Kodiak College faculty recognized for student success efforts

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Barb Brown, Associate Professor and Academic Counselor and Evelyn Davidson, Coordinator of Developmental Education and the Learning Center at Kodiak College have published an article in the Spring 2009 edition of LASSI in Action newsletter. The article describes how the Student Success Team at Kodiak uses affective assessment, Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI), along with cognitive assessment (e.g. Accuplacer) to determine placement of new students in appropriate Kodiak College courses.

Brown and Davidson included this topic in a recent presentation at the National institute of Staff and Organizational Development Conference on Bridging the Academic Readiness Gap in Austin, TX, where they were honored along with two other members of the Kodiak College Student Success team, colleagues Thia Falcone, Data Specialist and Sociology Adjunct Faculty and Debbi Canavan, Lead Tutor, The Learning Center. The team received NISOD Excellence Awards, honoring their efforts researching and implementing best practices with first-time college students to improve student success and persistence.
