Music faculty Sandra Belden passed away July 1
by Kathleen McCoy |
UAA instructor of voice Sandra "Mickey" Belden, one of UAA's longest serving and most
dedicated faculty members, passed away after a short but courageous battle with brain
cancer on July 1.
A long time, dedicated member of our university community, Mickey taught at the Anchorage
Community College and at the University of Alaska Anchorage after the merger.
"Among her many qualities, Mickey possessed a quick wit and the ability to view even
the most challenging situations in a positive light, such as her final courageous
battle with cancer," said Dr. Timothy Smith, chair of the UAA Music Department. "She
always saw that she had time in her busy schedule to share a contemplative thought
or helpful suggestion for anyone. When she laughed, she was always laughing with you.
We will miss her," Smith added.
In addition to her work at UAA, Mickey was also active in the Anchorage music scene
for the past 30 years. She was passionate about music, the arts and education and
was past president of the Anchorage Chapter of National Association of Teachers of
Singing.
Our deepest sympathy goes to Mickey's husband, Dr. George Belden -- associate professor
in the UAA Music Department, their sons and extended family.
A memorial service to honor Mickey's life was held on Sunday, July 5, at the UAA Fine
Arts Building. A memorial scholarship at UAA will be established in her name in the
near future. We, at UAA are privileged to have benefited from the talent and dedication
of Mickey Belden.
