September is Safety Awareness Month: Tip #2

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Safety and sustainability go hand in hand. If you are able to bike to work, consider wearing bright clothing or reflective materials and stay on well-lit trails when riding after dark. You can obtain reflective strips to put on your clothing at most department and specialty stores. For the most part, bicyclists must follow the same rules as vehicle drivers and do not enjoy the same rights-of-way as pedestrians. Covered bike shelters are expected to be installed on campus this fall.

If you drive to work, consider driving at a lower rate of speed through the UMed district. The population density, bike and pedestrian traffic of the UMed district have increased compared to 20 years ago. Driving slower can reduce the likelihood of accidents and increase your gas mileage.
