Fall 2009: Chancellor Fran Ulmer kicks off Alaska Native/Native American Heritage Month

Chancellor Ulmer will share the story of her Button Blanket/Robe and adoption into the "Tlingit Kaagwaantaan Clan of the Wolf House." The Button Blanket/Robe will remain on display in the Student Union during the month of November.

Please join Chancellor Fran Ulmer and the campus community for the Kick-off Reception in celebration of UAA's 2009 Alaska Native/Native American Heritage Month. Chancellor Ulmer will share the story of her Button Blanket/Robe and adoption into the "Tlingit Kaagwaantaan Clan of the Wolf House." The Button Blanket/Robe will remain on display in the Student Union during the month of November.

The Kick-off Reception will also feature moderator Dr. Jeane Breinig; the Lepquinm Gumilgit Gagoadim Tsimshian Dancers; special messages from a local Alaska Native elder and current UAA student; a Native dress review; and Native foods, including reindeer stew, baked salmon, fry bread, beans and squash, berries and cream and Russian tea. Interpreting services will be provided.

Throughout November, UAA and the Anchorage community have planned an exciting array of programs and events embracing the rich heritage of the Alaska Native/Native American cultures. This year's theme is "Share the Spirit" and the events offer opportunities for sharing and learning.
