UAA's Alaska Civil Rights Month 2010
by Kathleen McCoy |
UAA's 2010 Alaska Civil Rights Month has been highlighting and honoring achievements
of civil rights leaders since Jan. 14. You'll not want to miss the next out-of-state
guest speaker: The Rev. Dr. Samuel Billy Kyles is the last person remaining who was with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when he died.
Kyles is coming to speak at UAA on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. in the AHAINA room
in Rasmuson Hall 106. Kyles will discuss the last hours of King's life and encourage
student retention. The events are all open to the public and will continue through
Feb. 25. Some of the other events are:
- Women's Studies Program presents: "The Laramie Project" movie and panel discussion, Jan. 30
- "Our Stories" panel discussions with Black/African-Americans, UAA faculty, staff, students and alumni, Feb. 9 and 23
- Faculty Senate Diversity Committee will feature four faculty brown bag presentations
- "For the Rights of All: Ending Jim Crow in Alaska" film, followed by a panel discussion, Feb. 16
