UAA JPC professor published new research on news reporting

UAA Journalism and Public Communications professor Joy Chavez Mapaye's research was recently spotlighted on Miller-McCune.com. The research conducted by Mapaye, and colleague Kathleen Ryan of Miami University of Ohio, examined female and minority representation on the three major networks' news programs in 2007 and compared these to a similar survey conducted in 1987.
Both studies looked at the morning news, evening news and late-night news programming of ABC, NBC and CBS. Mapaye and Ryan found that in 1987, men reported 73 percent of stories. In 2007, men reported 48 percent of stories, women reported 40 percent of stories, and mixed-gender teams reported the remaining 12 percent of stories. In 1987, minorities reported only 5 percent of stories. This figure increased to 32 percent in 2007.
The study was recently published in the journal Electronic News.
