UAA University Police Department Chief Rick ShellRick Shell has accepted the position of Chief of the University Police Department (UPD) at UAA. Rick began his career in law enforcement more than 28 years ago as a police cadet with the Anchorage Police Department (APD), eventually earning the rank of sergeant. In 2006, Rick left APD to join UPD, first as an officer, later as a lieutenant and a deputy chief, and he began serving as UPD's interim chief last fall.

Rick's qualifications, years of experience and his passion for UAA made him the top choice as UAA's next UPD chief. A member of the team since 2006, Rick has not only gained the confidence and respect of his fellow UPD officers, but has developed strong relationships with campus and student leadership. During his time as interim chief, Rick worked to establish and deepen campus partnerships with key departments such as Residence Life, among others. In addition, Rick's longtime relationship with Anchorage's crisis responders has helped to extend UAA's presence in and partnerships with the community.
