The Fran Ulmer Transformative Research Award
by Kathleen McCoy |
The University Honors College, Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship, announces a major new opportunity for student researchers for AY 2010-2011. The Fran Ulmer Transformative Research Award focuses on research and creative projects in areas with the potential to transform the way we live, work and see the world.
This award seeks to foster active learning and discovery whether the proposed project employs basic, applied or community-based approaches to 21st century challenges that we all face. Broad topics of particular interest include sustainability, complexity, climate change, and social and public policy.
Degree-seeking undergraduate students in all disciplines are eligible to apply, individually or in teams, under the guidance of a faculty mentor or mentors. Awards will cover up to $5,000 in project expenses and each student winner will also be awarded a $1,500 stipend upon completion and presentation of the project. In the case of a team, the stipend will be divided among the team members. The award will be offered in both fall and spring semesters.
The Honors College has a tradition of naming a portion of its awards in honor of active members of the academic community whose contributions have been significant. Fran Ulmer has been an exemplar in public life as a mayor, legislator, and for two terms as lieutenant governor. She serves with distinction as UAA's chancellor, and prior to that served as the director of the Institute of Economic and Social Research. President Barack Obama appointed her to the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling.
Prior to her appointment to the oil spill commission, Chancellor Ulmer served on the Aspen Institute's Commission on Arctic Climate Change and held board positions with the Alaska Nature Conservancy, the CIRI Foundation, Commonwealth North, the National Parks Conservation Association and the Union of Concerned Scientists.
