UAA's Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) announces the new George Rogers Emerging Scholars Fund
by Kathleen McCoy |
For 66 years George Rogers, Ph.D. devoted his professional life to Alaska and to the training and education of others. Starting with his work on price controls for raw fish during WWII, he went on to analyze a wide range of Alaska topics, including fisheries, timber, oil and the Alaska Permanent Fund, and to publish seven books on Alaska policy and economics. A founding father and architect of Alaska's economic development, George Rogers was instrumental in the creation of the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER).
In honor of his work with young researchers, and in celebration of ISER's 50th anniversary, UAA is pleased to announce the establishment of the George Rogers Emerging Scholars Fund. This fund will provide Alaska-based fellowships for doctoral and post-doctoral students working in the field of social sciences. These ISER Fellows will work on research in Arctic social science and public policy. This fund will also create an annual George Rogers Award for Research.
As ISER prepares for its 50th anniversary celebration this coming fall, UAA hopes to raise $600,000 for the George Rogers Emerging Scholars Fund by September 2011. Not only is this a fitting goal for this public celebration, but it's a perfect time to pay tribute to this leader.
ISER was established 50 years ago in 1961 by the Alaska Legislature. ISER's research spans Alaska's modern history, examining everything from the effects of the massive 1964 earthquake to the effects of climate change on Alaska infrastructure, making salient contributions in a wide range of fields including the state economy, fisheries, energy and environment, education, social policy and Arctic social systems.
