This past July and August, pianist Timothy Smith was invited by the Chanson Arts Management Company, Ltd., to perform concerts and teach master classes across China.

Performances were given in six cities: Lanzhou, Qingdao, Dongying, Chongqing, Guangzhou and Suzhou. Master classes were given in Dongying, Chongqing (at the International Summer Piano Camp held at the Chongqing School of the Arts) and Suzhou.

Music professor Timothy Smith performed concerts across China in the summerof 2011The concerts in Qingdao and Guangzhou were part of a larger "gala concert" where the artist shared the stage at alternate times with the local symphony orchestras (i.e., performing either piano solos or duets onstage in between the orchestra 'sets'). Lanzhou, Dongying, Chongqing and Suzhou were full solo recitals; pianist Sa Chen and a faculty member from the Beijing Conservatory joined to contribute a performance or two on the recital in Chongqing. Smith was also joined by his wife, Rumi, on several of the concerts where they were featured as duo pianists.

This was Smith's fourth invited trip to China. The first visit was in the summer of 2006, for a series of concerts and master classes. The second and third visits were in the spring of 2007, to perform a two-piano concerto specifically arranged for pianist Sa Chen and Smith, which was performed with the China National Symphony Orchestra at two venues in Beijing, and was broadcast nationally over CCTV.

As for Smith's most recent tour, the performance in Guangzhou, at a venue that some describe as "the best concert hall in China," was actually videotaped and is available for online viewing at this web address: http://video.sina.com.cn/v/b/59298788-2090507933.html.
