February is Black History Month
by Jamie Gonzales |
UAA celebrates Black History Month in February with a series of programs and events.
This year's theme is "Black Women in American History and Culture." All events are
free to UAA students and open to the public.
The UAA Black Student Union and the UAA Multicultural Center are celebrating the launch
of Black History Month on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Dr. Melanie Watkins, psychiatrist and
author of Taking My Medicine: My Journey from Teenage Mother to Physician, will share her story of the challenges she faced as a young single mother striving
to meet her professional goals. Lunch will be served. All are invited. Dr. Watkins's
book will be available for purchase. This event is co-sponsored by the UAA Diversity
Action Council. Interpreting services and other accommodation are available as needed
with at least 48 hours advance notice. Please contact Mr. Andre Thorn of the UAA Multicultural
Center at (907) 786-4080 or eathorn@uaa.alaska.edu.
