UAA Debate Team goes head to head with Stanford in exhibition event

UAA vs Stanford DebateBack in January, UAA's standings in the World Universities Debating Championships were welcome news: 8th overall out of 195 universities competing at Worlds, and 2nd among U.S. schools represented. As the Seawolf Debate Program anxiously awaits the release of this year's overall world rankings of debate clubs, they've invited Stanford University (which came in 3rd among U.S. schools at Worlds) to Anchorage for their only intercollegiate exhibition match at home this year.

Come howl for the Seawolves this Thursday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in Fine Arts 150. The debaters will consider the legitimacy of hate crimes legislation. The verdict in the recent Tyler Clementi case has attracted new attention to hate crimes, with proponents arguing that such punishments serve to curb hatred in our society while opponents characterize the laws as criminalizing opinions. A reception to welcome the Stanford team will follow at Fireside Café.

You can participate

UAA will be live-streaming the debate from Fine Arts 150 on the UAA campus. We'll also be live-tweeting and blogging the event. Join in the fun; visit our UAA-Stanford Debate blog for a link to the livestream, the Twitter hashtag, debate background, interviews, event photos and much more. Even parliamentary debaters can H-O-W-L for the Hometeam!
