Inaugural Anchorage Brain Bee sponsored by UAA's Center for Community Engagement and Learning and neurobiology students
by Kathleen McCoy |
Saturday, March 31, the UAA Center for Community Engagement and Learning (CCEL) in
collaboration with BIO 490 Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology sponsored the first ever
Anchorage Brain Bee. BIO 490 was designed with a community engagement component, so
as part of their course grades, students prepared research posters and organized the
event that focused on trivia about the structures and functions of specific brain
regions and landmarks. All questions were taken from the Society for Neuroscience
publication Brain Facts.
The Anchorage Brain Bee was part of the larger International Brain Bee movement, which is a competition where high school students learn brain facts and then participate in a spelling bee-like event. Open to 9th-12th graders throughout Anchorage interested in learning more about the field of neuroscience, the Anchorage Brain Bee also invited participants to a luncheon reception where UAA students presented posters on current brain research.
