April 14, 2012: Two Dept. of Music faculty members to perform Brazilian and Afro-Cuban jazz

The John Damberg Latin Jazz Quintet will perform enchanting Brazilian and Afro-Cuban melodies set to the exciting rhythms of samba, frevo, baion, choro, bossa nova, maracatu, mambo, cha-cha-cha and danzon.

The John Damberg Latin Jazz Quintet features:
John Damberg-marimba, steel drum, Latin percussion (percussion instructor for UAA)
Mark Manners-guitar
Laura Koenig-flute (music instructor for UAA)
Bob Andrews-bass
Cameron Cartland-drum set and Brazilian percussion
 
This concert will feature new compositions by noted Alaska composers John Damberg and Mark Manners and rarely performed music of Brazilian and Afro-Cuban Latin jazz giants Hermeto Pascoal, Chucho Valdez, Andy Narell, Djvan and Ray Bryant.
 
The John Damberg Latin Jazz Quintet strives to present fresh, new musical landscapes for Alaskans to enjoy. Their mission is to create new Latin jazz compositions and re-discover the music of the Latin jazz icons of the Caribbean, Central and South America in performances throughout Alaska and beyond.
