Senior Kelsea Johnson breaks UAA record in the heptathlon and women's long jump

Powered by four personal bests, senior Kelsea Johnson broke the Alaska Anchorage record in the heptathlon with 4,940 points, good for second at the 2012 GNAC Multi-Event Outdoor Championships on Tuesday. Winning the heptathlon was Seattle Pacific's Ali Worthen with 5,199 points, while Western Washington's Katie Reichert took third with 2,529 points.

In addition to breaking the heptathlon record, the Sitka local broke the Seawolf record in the women's long jump with a NCAA provisional and winning leap of 18-6.5. Johnson bested the previous record of 18-6, set by Kim Brady on April 18, 2008. Her long jump mark is tied for 10th in the GNAC record book.

Johnson's heptathlon score currently ranks eighth best in Div. II this season and is the seventh-best point total in GNAC history. A likely participant for the NCAA Championships on May 24-26, Johnson also furnished a career best in the 800 meters with a winning time of 2:21.97.

A transfer from Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay, Ore., Johnson also registered a toss of 108-7 in the javelin. On Monday, Johnson set personal bests in the 100-meter hurdles (15:05) and in the 200 meters (25.99).

Johnson will reunite with her team for the Occidental Invitational on May 5 in Eagle Rock, Calif.
