Ryan McCarthy, new head coach for women's basketballUAA Athletic Director Steve Cobb announced Tuesday that Ryan McCarthy has been hired as the Seawolves' women's basketball coach.

McCarthy comes to UAA from Great Northwestern Athletic Conference (GNAC) rival Northwest Nazarene University (NNU), where he served in a variety of coaching roles since 2007. In all, he spent five seasons at NNU--as an assistant, interim head and associate head coach--following a professional basketball career in Oregon and Europe.

"We are delighted Coach McCarthy is joining the Seawolf family," said Cobb. "Within the GNAC, he has experienced success as a player, assistant coach and as a head coach. He has worked very hard to prepare himself for the opportunity to lead a program. He is familiar with Alaska, our program and our players individually."

McCarthy joins UAA after the unexpected departure of Nathan Altenhofen left the team without a head coach just weeks before the season started.

"Coach McCarthy's personal and professional reputation is very well known to us and throughout the conference," Cobb said. "We are confident that we now have the right leader for our exceptional women's basketball program."
