August 2012: New associate director for School of Nursing announced

Maureen O'Malley, new associate director for the School of NursingBill Hogan, interim dean for the College of Health, and Barbara Berner, director of the School of Nursing, have named Maureen O'Malley as the associate director of the School of Nursing (SON).

O'Malley has functioned at all levels within the SON: she joined the SON faculty in fall of 1993 as an adjunct clinical instructor. Since that time, she has taught many courses in several programs (A.A.S., B.S. and M.S.) within the SON. In 2009, she was awarded tenure and promoted to the rank of associate professor. She holds a baccalaureate degree from the William Paterson University of New Jersey, a master's degree from the University of Southern California and a doctorate from Rush University, College of Nursing in Chicago, Ill.  Recently, she was selected to serve as a program evaluator for the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).

O'Malley has been active in many UAA professional activities, serving two terms on the Faculty Senate, representing UAA faculty on the Planning and Budget Advisory Council (PBAC), as well as serving on the UAA Facilities Board and the Undergraduate Research Council. Recently, she was selected as a co-chair of the UAA Veteran & Military Student Task Force.

O'Malley retired from the USAF Reserve at the rank of colonel. She has been active in the local chapter of the International Nursing Honor Society (Sigma Theta Tau International) and she was elected to serve on the Nominating Committee of the Board of Director of the Western Institute of Nursing. She has served as the treasurer of the Board of Directors of Denali Family Services and as the secretary/treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Alaska Heart Institute Research Foundation.
