"I'm pleased to announce that Dr. N. Jane Shelby has been selected as the new director of the Alaska WWAMI School of Medical Education. She also holds the rank of professor of medical education within the College of Health and concurrently serves as first-year assistant dean and affiliate professor with the University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine.

Jane comes to UAA from Montana State University (MSU) in Bozeman, Montana, where she served as interim executive director of MSU's Division of Health Sciences, home to the Montana WWAMI Medical Education Program, the Office of Rural Health and Area Health Education Center, Health Professions Advising, the Montana Medical Laboratory Scientist Program and the American Indian Research Opportunity (AIRO) Program. During her two years in this position, Jane helped expand and enhance the curriculum for the WWAMI and AIRO programs, and served as a state and national representative for the Montana WWAMI program regarding medical education and health care workforce needs in rural communities. Also during her tenure, she created and directed service-learning projects to connect WWAMI students with Navajo and Blackfeet Nation families. For her many efforts, she was presented with MSU's Faculty Award for Excellence in 2010.

Prior to her time in Montana, Jane was a tenured associate professor of surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she also earned her bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees.

Jane is an excellent addition to the UAA community, having served in many leadership capacities including the co-director of the Regional Collaborations Program within UW's Institute for Transitional Health Science. She's also involved with the American Burn Association and the Surgical Infection Society, and has authored over 200 published scientific articles, book chapters and abstracts.

I am thrilled to have someone of Jane's caliber joining our team. Please help me in welcoming her to UAA, and in thanking Alaska WWAMI interim director Dr. Bob Furilla for his excellent leadership during the past two years."
