Spring 2012: Deadlines for student awards for community-engaged learning project fast approaching

by Michelle Saport  |

The Center for Community Engagement & Learning (CCEL) is currently accepting proposals for two community-engaged project awards. The application deadline for both awards is Friday, Nov. 30. Visit the CCEL website for more information and to download the applications.

Dr. Alex Hills Engineering & Civic Engagement Award
UAA undergraduates in the School of Engineering are encouraged to apply for this $2,500 award to use their engineering knowledge and practice for the benefit of society. The award recipient will conduct a community-engaged learning project that solves engineering and technology-based problems in partnership with a local organization, under the supervision of an engineering faculty member.

Second Bridge Scholarship Award
This award of up to $2,000 encourages UAA undergraduates enrolled in any degree-seeking program to pursue a structured, but non-traditional educational experience in service-learning. Students who engaged in a study-abroad program or a domestic community-engaged program crossed a "first bridge" that expanded their educational horizons. Crossing the "second bridge" requires a commitment to either an international setting or a domestic setting that will push the boundaries of traditional education, meet a community need and afford a richer and deeper experience for the student.
