Video: Meet Seawolf debater John Macy

by Jess  |

John Macy, a UAA philosophy student, was first introduced to Seawolf Debate through a local debate competition. With zero previous debating experience, he decided to participate in a debate on the topic of "Consumers have a duty to buy locally." He won (a $500 Kaladi Brothers Coffee gift card !!!) and has been hooked on debate ever since.

"Philosophy speaks to me because it is the general study of truth," John says. "I think philosophy encompasses what are really the most important questions of life, especially with things like ethics, how we ought to act, what is our role in society..."

John has represented UAA at several debate competitions nationally and, most recently, internationally at the World Universities Debating Championships in The Hauge, Netherlands.

Through his experiences with the Seawolf Debate program, John has become a more effective communicator both personally and in the classroom, and he believes the skills he's learned have provided him a better ability to succeed academically.

Meet John Macy.
