All international students must show that they have obtained a certain level of English
Proficiency. UAA does not offer conditional admission due to incomplete or low English Proficiency
Test Scores.
English Proficiency Testing
All test scores submitted must be official. Please ask the testing center to make
the results available to the University of Alaska Anchorage.
Associate and Bachelor Degree Applicants
Master and Doctoral Degree Applicants
- Minimum TOEFL Score: 79 iBT (prior to 2026)*
- Minimum TOEFL Score: 4 Overall iBT (2026 and ongoing)*
- Minimum IELTS Score: 6.5 Overall Band
*TOEFL Scoring System Changes
Starting in January 2026, ETS will change the TOEFL scoring system to better align
with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
- Tests taken before January 26, 2026 will receive a score from 0–120. These scores remain valid for two years.
- Tests taken on or after January 26, 2026 will receive a score from 1–6, along with a midpoint equivalent of the old 0–120 scale. These scores are also valid
for two years.
UAA will use the scoring system that matches your test date when reviewing your admission
to an academic program.

English Proficiency Waivers
If you meet one of the following requirements you may submit an English Proficiency
waiver form:
- You are a native English language speaker.
- You have attended a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, and have:
- received a "C" or better in a course equivalent to UAA's Writing 111 course, or
- obtained a Bachelor or Master Degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or
university.
