Formerly Used Defense Site in Alaska
GIS Support for Environmental Restoration
US Army Corps of Engineers - Alaska District
The Department of Defense is responsible for environmental restoration of properties formerly owned, leased, or otherwise used by the United States. But many of these lands in Alaska hadn't been digitally mapped, even though the information is critical for land management and environmental restoration. AERC joined with UAA faculty and students, as well as Northern Geospatial Consulting, to define the boundaries of Formerly Used Defense Sites, or FUDS, from World War II. The improved data benefits the Department of Defense's ongoing environmental restoration efforts across Alaska.
