Management and Monitoring of Salmon Using Fish Weirs

Samon Survey Innovation
Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson
Salmon surveys are an AERC specialty. For the past decade, teams of research technicians have counted salmon swimming through Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson using sonar, camera, fish nets, and more. These surveys provide a sense of population health for species up and down the food chain, including the endangered Cook Inlet beluga. But as times and technologies change, it's important for AERC to update its equipment. This cross-campus collaboration brings together faculty from engineering, welding, and biology to innovate new methods for surveying salmon and develop technologies tailored specifically to Alaska’s challenging environment. The project team analyzes and recommends next steps to make sure future AERC staff have the most accurate, efficient, and accessible fish counts. The better the salmon data, the better the conservation of Cook Inlet.
