Forestry Management: Spruce Beetles Survey

Spruce Beetle Remediation

Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson
Ongoing from 2019

Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson (JBER) is working to better track and manage spruce beetle infestations on base. A joint effort between the United States Army Core of Engineers (USACE) and the Applied Environmental Research Center (AERC) at the University of Alaska has been collecting data on spruce stands infested with beetles on JBER. The information gathered on beetle activity has informed the response and management strategies on base. AERC continues to work with USACE to identify and remove infected and high risk trees on base. The management areas are continuously assessed to address new outbreaks.

  • Identify areas of Spruce Beetle outbreak to inform base management plans.
  • Remediate areas of outbreak to decrease the spread of the spruce beetles.
  • Survey areas to identify future risks from Spruce Beetles regarding wildland fires.
