Fort Wainwright Training Lands

Fort Wainwright is a US Army base just east of Fairbanks. It’s home to active military training exercises, as well an abundance of songbirds, shorebirds, bats, fish, and amphibians, several of which are protected by federal and state laws. AERC completed a wildlife survey on all Fort Wainwright lands to minimize restrictions to the military mission, while enhancing biological diversity and ecological health. Researchers mapped wildlife use and abundance for more than 60 species. The resulting data will help the US Army make land management decisions that both provide the best military training experiences while protecting the natural landscape of Alaska.
