Journey into Engineering at UAA
Join us at the UAA Engineering & Industry Building for two nights packed with demonstrations and great engineering discussions as part of Anchorage Engineers Week! Thank you to ConocoPhillips Alaska for supporting this event.
What: Meet engineering professors, tour research facilities, watch demonstrations, participate in activities, and learn more about what UAA has to offer to future engineers, computer scientists, geospatial professionals, and project managers.
Who: High school students and parents interested in learning more about the UAA College of Engineering.
When: Tuesday, February 20th and Thursday, February 22nd, 6:00 to 8:00 pm
Where: UAA Engineering & Industry Building (2900 Spirit Dr)
How Much: FREE!
Space is limited. We request that attendees limit their party to one adult, if possible.

Civil Engineering - CE Testing Equipment
Dr. Tom Ravens and Dr. Polly Murray will demonstrate two pieces of civil engineering testing equipment: a hydrokinetic flume and a stress test. They will discuss the role civil engineers play in making our infrastructure safe. They will also provide an overview of the different career options that are available to civil engineers in Alaska and around the world.
Mechanical Engineering - Materials Testing Lab
Dr. Raghu Srinivasan, one of Alaska’s leading experts on corrosion chemistry, will demonstrate the research equipment in the Materials Testing Lab. He will discuss how his research helps industries across Alaska to better understand the degradation of their equipment due to atmospheric corrosion. He will also answer your questions about UAA's mechanical engineering degrees.
Project Management - Construction Game
LuAnn Piccard, chair of the Department of Project Management and a former longtime executive at Hewlett-Packard, will demonstrate how project management thinking and processes give engineers and other professionals the tools they need for success through an interactive construction game. She will also share information about UAA's Minor in Project Management and Master of Science in Project Management, two degrees that help advance the careers of engineers and many other professionals.
Admissions and Advising Presentation
UAA Admissions and Advising Counselers will share important information about how to become a UAA student, how to apply for scholarships, the cost of tuition, the educational pathways for future STEM professionals, and more. They will also be able to answer your questions about UAA's processes.
Computer Science & Engineering - Morse Decoder & Pong Game
Dr. Sebastian Neumayer, an expert on cryptocurrencies and disaster preparedness for networks, will demonstrate the field-programmable gate array implementation of a morse decoder and an interactive pong game. He will discuss the relationship between computer software and computer hardware, and answer your questions about the computer science profession.
Electrical Engineering - Double E Research
Dr. Jens Munk, an expert on electromagnetic modeling, will demonstrate the research equipment in the Electrical Engineering Lab, including equipment used for electromagnetics, general electrical engineering, electrical power and utility, and radio frequency investigation. He will also discuss the many career opportunities available to electrical engineers.
Geomatics - Geospatial Technology
Dr. Caixia Wang, chair of the Department of Geomatics and a remote sensing expert, and Dr. Gennady Gienko, whose research has included modeling a moon of Saturn, will demonstrate the technology that geospatial engineers use in their work. They will share insights about Geomatics, the in-demand field that integrates the acquisition, management, analysis, modeling, and presentation of geospatial information.
Machine Shop - Fabrication Equipment
Corbin Rowe, the machinist for the College of Engineering, will lead a tour through the machine shop, showing off fabrication equipment like the water jet, 3D printers, and welding equipment, plus he will share some insights about the process for fabrication for faculty and student research projects.
