The Alaska Comprehensive Forensic Training Academy
A staggering 75% of Alaskans have either personally experienced or know someone who has been a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault. The state's rate of child mistreatment surpasses the national average by 69.3%, while elder physical abuse is 2.4 times higher and elder psychological abuse is 1.6 times higher than national rates. An assault occurs every hour in the state.
Despite the pervasive nature of violence, many regions in Alaska lack the capacity to document and collect the necessary medical evidence crucial for aiding victims of crime. The Alaska Comprehensive Forensic Training Academy (ACFTA) offers accessible training to address this gap, empowering health care professionals to deliver trauma-informed, evidence-driven care and contribute to enhancing community safety. Beyond its training objectives, the ACFTA team actively seeks ongoing feedback from community members, including stakeholders and professionals across various health care fields throughout the state. Conducting a tour of Alaska, they host meetings and focus groups in communities to ensure that the training provided aligns with the diverse and unique needs of Alaska's communities.
