Groundbreaking report sheds light on health disparities experienced by Black Alaskans
On June 30, the Alaska Black Caucus held the Covid & Beyond: Black Health & Wellness Town Hall at the Wendy Williamson Auditorium at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Amana Mbise, Ph.D., an assistant professor with the School of Social Work under the College of Health, presented eye-opening findings from the first-ever Black Alaskans Health Status report.
MSW alumni Kim Kovol appointed acting DFCS commissioner
UAA Master of Social Work alumni Kim Kovol recently was appointed by Gov. Mike Dunleavy as acting commissioner of the new Alaska Department of Family and Community Services.
Alumni of Distinction: Amanda Metivier
School of Social Work alumna and 2021 Alumni Humanitarian Amanda Metivier is the director of the Alaska Child Welfare Academy and co-founder of Facing Foster Care in Alaska. Through her advocacy at both organizations, she has led efforts to expand services and support for foster youth across Alaska. Metivier will be honored at the UAA Alumni of Distinction celebration banquet on April 23, 2022.
Oregon leader will use her own refugee experience to guide changes in state programs
MSW alumni Toc Soneoulay-Gillespie was featured in an Oregon Capital Chronicle article about her efforts to use her own refugee experience to guide changes in state programs. The new director of the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Advancement wants to build bridges between state agencies and the people they are supposed to serve.
