Biography

Hello, I commonly introduce myself in Yugtun/Yup'ik as the following, "Waqaa, wii-nga Essaaq. Hello, I am Essaaq", I am also known as Mary Sherbick." My mother comes from the village of Twin Hills, Alaska. My father is Leon Sherbick from Trenton, New Jersey. However, I grew up primarily here, in Anchorage, but I have spent many summers in Bristol Bay, where my mothers family is from.

I have been involved with UAA since 2009, primarily as an undergraduate student and as a part-time staff member holding various positions including a biomedical lab technician and a peer mentor. I have held full-time positions within UAA for about 5 years all together. I have a Bachelor's of Science degree in Psychology with a minor in Alaska Native Studies from UAA and a Master of Arts degree in Rural Development from UAF.

Outside of work I enjoy doing subsistence activities, skin sewing, and gardening. My immediate family includes my husband, daughter, and golden retriever. Fun fact about me is that I lived outside of the United States in the country of Belize for 3 months before being medically released, serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer.
